P59703 Linux DECNET link reply
Sad because DECNET was ripped out of the Linux kernel? Well, rejoice my friend! Someone has picked up the LinuxDECNET project and made it compile with modern kernels. It includes the "dnprogs" tool suite as well.

https://github.com/JohnForecast/LinuxDECnet

Announcement:
https://lists.dfupdate.se/hyperkitty/list/[email protected]/thread/UQTY3CHFTAHDBMD2VZQAVYO6HXIIDVEQ/

So far from what I've tested it looks good, except for a few things: phone (not working), remote login from OpenVMS to Linux (other way works). Thank you John!

P59810 link reply
That's actually pretty cool. You would think people just wouldn't compile it into their kernel if they didn't want it. But now it's not even an option? Sad if true.
P59888 link reply
i2vmsnet-logo.png
It hasn't worked since 3.x kernel. Sometime in between 3.x-4.x it broke. No one wanted to maintain it, so they ripped it out. Notice IPX is gone too. Not that there are alot of people using them, but I'd like the *option* of using them if need be. If you work with systems from the mid-90's to, say, 2010, you find IPX and DECNET. WindowsNT will talk IPX.

They ripped out shift-page up/down scroll back, too. "Use Screen" they say.
P62693 dapfs link reply
I've been playing around with dapfs. I didn't expect it to work, but it does. With dapfs, you can mount a VMS directory (say, a user's home) on a Linux mount point.

As per the instructions, copy dapfs.com to sys$system on the target VMS system. Run the N***** commands at the top of it:
$ MCR N***** DEFINE OBJECT DAPFS NUMBER 0 FILE SYS$SYSTEM:DAPFS.COM
$ MCR N***** SET OBJECT DAPFS ALL

mount -t dapfs kushal ~/Desktop -o username=your_vms_username,password=realsecret

You'll then get something like DUA1:[YOUR_VMS_USERNAME] mounted on ~/Desktop. dapfs uses FUSE. You can then interact with the files there, including read/write. One time it did hang and I had to kill the associated process from the VMS side before I could unmount the directory, so it's not perfect.

It's still dead code cluttering up the kernel source tree. And if it does get shipped in popular distros as a module someone will figure out a way of triggering modprobe to load it and then exploit one of the 6.000.000 buffer overflows inside.

It was ripped out. Now it's a separate module.

I know, I know. If it's not blinking lights on a smartphone today's computer users can't figure it out. Pretty soon people won't even have to paw at the screen to make it work, they'll just grunt. When I take out Spamhaus, Cloudflare, Google, and Faceberg, the new network will not allow T***** - to ward off normies. I'm building the network right now, one VMS node at a time.

You know what? I'm going to install IPX too. Just to spite TPCnormies.

If anyone needs me, I'll be busy connecting Linux with Windows NT Terminal Server via IPX.

There's been some new releases and stability is better now. Mail (both ways) works as well as login, dapfs, phone, remote tasks, etc. The best way is probably to git pull the changes and leave the source in /usr/src so you can 'git pull' and rebuild when a new version comes out.

Father Christmas, from what I've been able to see, used the SUBMIT verb to submit a job as a remote task and (somehow) used the Mail11 facility. In DECnet, you can have a remote node execute a job similar to rsh or rexec.

decw$paint is too limiting; I'd hate to make that in it although it's technically possible. The original was made in Gimp, then converted to XBM, one of the two image formats decw$paint understands (the other being DDIF). Then I dncopy'd it from the Linux node to the VMS node and opened it on the virtual X terminal. The vaxstation2000 (microvax2000 in workstation mode) is the only one I found so far that will become a virtual X terminal thin client and network boot so don't waste time with the others. Some of the others support color but they won't net boot from an Infoserver100.

Did you know LAT is available for Linux? I think it should be a part of DECnet for Linux but it is separate. This is the only copy I could find https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+sourcefiles/latd/1.35/latd_1.35.tar.xz (builds on 6.6.x, probably others).
