Is it me or has there been more of those stories with traditional fantasy elements (magic, dragons, dungeons, ...) but analysed in a more "rational" way.
A couple examples of what I mean:
[bold:
Every adventure needs weapons, Kodawari Rudy's life as a blacksmith
]
: Rudy is a blacksmith apprentice in a "dungeon city". Her master mostly deals in day-to-day tools for the citizen but Rudy wants to make great weapons for adventurers. The monsters aren't the main focus, but their ecology is detailed in a way that makes sense.
[bold:
Ruri Dragon
]
: Ruri is a normal JK who suddenly wake up one morning with dragon horns on her head. It turns out her father is a dragon and so she is developping dragon-like characteristics (horns, fire breath, ...) as puberty hits. Again, the dragon characteristics are described as biological processes and aren't just "magic".
I would like it if it became an actual trend. That's way more interesting than yet another reincarnation story which make up 90% of fantasy manga these days.

Technical magic isn't really magical anyway.
A more naturalistic attitude may keep authors from using magic in uninteresting ways. I don't think it makes them better writers.

Have you read Oshi no Ko? It's a manga series written by Akasaka Aka-sensei, the author and artist behind Kaguya-sama: Love is War. That said, I wouldn't have guessed it if one bonus chapter didn't include a reference to Kaguya-sama. The genres are completely different.
If you want to know more, you can look at the wikipedia article (
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshi_no_ko
) and the My Anime List's page (
https://myanimelist.net/anime/52034/Oshi_no_Ko
). You can read the manga for free, over Tor and without any javascript here:
https://oshinokomanga.online
(I've got complaints about the traduction, but I don't speak moon-runes). I don't know who makes all those websites, but it sure is great that they are schizo-compliant.
I'll freely talk about events in volume 1 (up to chapter 10), but will use the "spoiler" markup for later spoilers. If you decide to reply to this thread, please do so as well. Let's have this thread look like a letter to Nelson Mandela.
For my initial impressions, it reminds me of Urasawa Naoki's "Monster" quite a bit. The fact that the story starts in an hospital and that the protagonist is a doctor probably play a role in that impression. The multi-year chase, psychological horror themes and slight supernatural elements are other similarities I've found between the two works. Oshi no Ko is definitely more optimistic that Monster though, and doesn't feel as much like "misery *****". Not that I would consider Monster to be that either, but it does feel excessively harsh on the characters sometimes.
Regarding the form, I find the manga very well paced. The faces are great too. I don't cry easily, but I've found myself wet-eyed over a few scenes.
[spoiler:
One such scene is the discussion between Abiko-sensei and Yoriko-sensei, in the former's drawing room
]
. I understand some readers might be put off by the amount of text, but I don't particularly mind it.
[spoiler:
What do you think about that change to Ruby's eyes? I personally hate it, how cynical she turned even though she was supposed to be a "pure" character. It's probably intentional on the author's part though, and, in retrospect, my feeling is pretty illustrative to the selfishness the mangaka attributes to idol fans.

I prefer translations to be as literal as possible. A similar situation in watamote was translated as "become their princess", iirc. I especially don't like slang in amateur translations because I never know whether it's a faithful translation or the translator being a retard. The best solution is to use tl notes like here (instead of using them for your own commentary, *****)

>I prefer translations to be as literal as possible.
Wrong preference.
I understand that it is because, most of the time, the translation work is done by a retard, but a good translation should seek to make the work appear to have been written on the translated language. That means having a wide knowledge of idioms in both languages so that an expression in the original language can be replaced by an equivalent expression in the translated language. Using a literal translation of a term that ends up sounding extremely obtuse in another language should only be done as a last resort.
